Earth-Friendly Practices While on Vacation
Even while you’re on a holiday, it pays to be eco-friendly. The junk that you leave in the country or city that you’re visiting can have a huge impact on its environment. Just imagine if other people were to visit your own area and they leave the same mark. You wouldn’t want to live in a place that is ecologically deteriorating, would you?
There are all sorts of ways to help minimize the environmental impact that you cause when you’re on vacation in another country or city. Keeping these in mind and changing your habits will go a long way towards saving the environment.
Transportation
To minimize fuel combustion, consider your choice of transportation. If you’re going to drive to your holiday destination, take as many people in the car as possible instead of getting all the people in your group take separate vehicles. Carpooling is the best way to keep traffic to a minimum as well.
If you’re going to take public transport, it’s better to take the train or bus whenever possible. While travel time may take longer than flying, it does require lesser fuel use. However, if you should take air travel, it’s best to book direct. When more people opt to go for direct flights, there is a lesser demand for connecting flights which means lesser fuel combustion.
Re-usable packages
Instead of buying bottled water each time someone in the family grows thirsty, how about taking water bottles with you when you explore the area? Plastic bottles are non-biodegradable so you’ll do a lot of good if you’re going to just refill your re-usable water bottle before you leave the hotel or vacation house. You can have everyone bring their own water bottles – most of them come with carry-on straps for convenience.
As much as possible, don’t take carry out and opt to dine in proper restaurants that serve food in reusable plates. This can reduce waste and garbage that tends to accumulate in areas where there are a large number of tourists on holiday. When shopping in the local market, better take a bag with you so you don’t have to rely on plastic bags especially for small purchases. Alternatively, you can also have all small purchases placed in one big bag which is easier to carry around.
Minimizing garbage
Another way to minimize the garbage that you leave in the place you’re visiting is by avoiding the use of disposable products such as single-use contact lenses. Go for rechargeable batteries instead of buying a fresh pack each time the old one runs out of power. It’s better to use a digital camera for your pictures instead of film-based ones.
When traveling with children, teach them about the importance of keeping their surroundings clean. Throwing their wrappers in the right garbage bin, or better yet, eating fruits instead of sweets can help save the environment.
