The number of 46133 actually refers to the number of fragments, including pottery fragments, but if considering the number of items (i.e. grouping the fragments of one pot into an item), the total number stands at 5397 items or museum ''lots'' plus 370 ''museum quality'' objects. Also, Yale holds that at the time of their removal in 1912, Peruvian law stated that finds such as these could be kept by their discoverers. There was a provision for Peru to claim unique items or replicas thereof, but this provision was never acted upon by the Peruvian government. That law was later changed and material excavated in Bingham's 1914/15 expeditions was on loan to Yale and returned to Peru in the 1920s due to a delay caused by WW1. It would therefor seem that Yale is legally in posession of the items excavated in 1912, but a current national movement in Peru states otherwise and demands the return of all these items.

As the author of the above I must make a correction to the number of pieces held by Yale University at the Peabody Museum originating from Machu Picchu stated above.
